Summertime Sailfish
The image of several Sailfish release flags flying from the rigger plays nicely against a South Florida winter sky. However, anyone who thinks Sailfish are strictly cold-weather species might want to reconsider. Spindlebeaks aren’t just for guys in grundens. For the past several summers, a growing number of Sailfish have been caught from Palm Beach to the Upper Keys. Yet, the bite is nowhere better than off the coast of Fort Lauderdale and Miami during the summer months. This must be how the name “Sailfish Alley” came about for Broward and Dade County.


This afternoon John and Ms. Crowford joined the Lady Pamela II for Deep Sea Fishing offshore Fort Lauderdale. Once we cleared Port Everglades, trolling gear was in the water and it was time to reel in some fish. The Kings and Bonitos were coming through strong. In the mist of our King and Bonito action, Andrew noticed a Sailfish swim into our spread, it was a nice surprise. Andrew teased the fish to the boat, fed it and we were hooked. The Sail started its parade of jumps right before our eyes. After a nice show and a good fight, we got the Sailfish to the boat and the girls got a good look at the purple-ish, blue shades these fish are famous for.

The Atlantic Sailfish swam away a happy camper and trolling gear went back in the water immediately. Not even 15 minutes after Sailfish number one, another Sailfish jumped on our bait and John called dibs on the rod. John was all smiles as fought his first pelagic fish to the transom.
