Captain JJ and I had an absolutely stellar fishing day aboard our brand-new Lady Pamela II sportfishing boat, a 55 foot Lemay. Surprisingly, the trip started out very slow. It was a six hour charter and we saw a few sailfish jumping around in the morning and we tried to get in front of them with live dates, without success. We then put the kites up in the air and had a few bites but again had no hookups. All of our action began in the last hour of the trip. First, David from Texas caught and released a huge hammerhead shark. Right after that a 40 pound mahi-mahi ate the right long kite and took off. We fought this fish for half an hour and right when we got it to the back of the boat it fell off. I grabbed a spinning rod and threw another live bait out there hoping it would bite again. Five minutes later the fish chased the goggleeye bait right to the boat and ate it at the transom. As soon as we set the hook the line broke and the fish went jumping away. I grabbed another spinner and cast another live bait about one hundred feet behind the boat. l couldn’t believe it but this same fish ate the third bait! Capt. JJ quickly backed the boat up and I gaffed it and threw it in the box. What a catch! Fifteen minutes after boating this big mahi the bottom bait took a hit. It was a six-foot tiger shark that gave our anglers one final test but they got it to the boat for pictures and a release. The Lady Pamela II boats have caught a few tigers but it’s a relatively rare shark to catch in Fort Lauderdale. This is first tiger shark I have personally been a part of catching and was a great highlight to an awesome fishing day.
