Today Justin and I had another group from Texas come out fishing with us on a shared charter. We trolled and shark fished the whole trip. Trolling was very productive as we wee landing lots of kingfish and bonito. We got one nice bite on a shark but it got hung on a lobster trip and broke the line.
July 23
Captain JJ, and mate Mike, had Chris from Texas this morning on an 8 am 12 pm trip. The trolling was productive as they caught a few Blackfin tunas and some bonito and kingfish.
The boat had a live well full of blue runners and goggleyes so they tried some wreck fishing. Wreck fishing can be very productive using live baits rigged to a circle hook on a 30 foot long leader. A variety of species can be caught, including cobia, Warsaw groupers, black groupers, Almaco jacks, and amberjacks. Today they caught a 100 lb Warsaw grouper and Chris was the happiest person I have ever seen! Congrats Chris!
July 25
Tonight the Lady Pamela III had a 7 pm 11 pm snapper trip. We had 10 anglers on the boat and they were busy. The group landed 30 yellowtail and mangrove snappers.
Driftfishing
The daytime driftfishing trips have been great, with both morning and afternoon trips using dead sardines as bait to load up on kingfish and bonito. The afternoon trip even caught a Blackfin tuna and some mutton snappers!

Today Captain Darin and mate Mike had one helluva trip on the Lady Pamela IV. There were six anglers together on a split charter, and everybody caught fish. The group landed kingfish, bonito and two Blackfin tunas. After catching all these fish they decided to try some shark fishing out in 350 feet of water. There was plenty of fresh bonito for bait as it was just harvested that morning. Once setting out the three big rods mounted with130 Penn International reels they sat patiently and waited for a bite.
One hour later, the rod bent over and angler Philip jumped into the fighting chair. After a 20 minute battle a huge Mako shark popped up behind the boat! These are one of the fastest sharks that swim in the ocean and it was an awesome sight. These fish are not usually captured around here, but this is the second one weve caught this year. They are normally found much further offshore on the east coast, so this has been a real fishing bonanza for a couple of our lucky anglers. Way to go Philip!

Today’s afternoon charter was a six hour mahi-mahi trip run by Captain Leo and mate Jake. Arnie, visiting from Canada, just wanted to catch some dinner, and the crew did just that…and them some! They started the trip out by trolling in between 100-300 feet of water. The kingfish and bonito were swarming like bees and our anglers were catching fish as fast as the lines got in the water. The action was nonstop, but getting monotonous for Leo. He had a notion that there was more dramatic action in deeper water so they picked up and ran offshore. Once they got to 700 feet of water they saw something floating, something they will never forget.
Leo motored over to the floating object thinking it might be holding some mahi-mahi underneath it. The object turned out to be none other than a square grouper floating offshore! For the uninitiated, that’s a big square bale of marijuana that Leo dutifully reported to the local authorities. The Lady Pamela crew was obligated to stand by until law enforcement came and picked up the bale, so the fishing was held up for about an hour. Leo was ultimately rewarded for his honest efforts though, as he came upon a huge tree floating in the water that was loaded with fish. The crew boated over 50 mahi-mahi and six wahoo off that tree, keeping only the largest 25 mahi and the wahoos. It was one hell of a day for Arnie and his two kids!
